WHAT WE DO

At SelectBarristers.com, we provide free, non‑legal support to individuals navigating legal challenges, by acting as lay representatives or trusted guides through the early stages of your case. Our core mission is to help you understand your rights, assess your situation clearly, and decide the best course of action — whether that involves self‑representation, informal resolution, or referral to a qualified direct access barrister.

We operate strictly within the legal framework that allows for lay representation and support. In many courts and tribunals — especially in the Employment Tribunal, Small Claims Track, and certain Tribunal Services — individuals are permitted to be accompanied or supported by a lay representative. This is recognised in law under:

  • Rule 11(1)–(4) of the Employment Tribunals (Constitution and Rules of Procedure) Regulations 2013,

  • Section 27 of the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990, and

  • Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) Part 27.6 (which governs representation in small claims).

These provisions allow a lay representative to help present a case, assist in communication, organise evidence, and - in some forums - speak on your behalf with permission of the judge or panel. Lay representatives are particularly helpful where a party may be unrepresented, vulnerable, or unfamiliar with legal procedure.

We do not provide legal advice or act as solicitors or barristers; our service is guidance and support only. Instead, we offer a supportive bridge - helping you articulate your concerns, prepare effectively, and, where appropriate, refer you to a carefully vetted direct access barrister whose expertise matches your case. Direct access barristers can be instructed without going through a solicitor, and many accept referrals for employment, civil, family, regulatory, and criminal matters.

Our support is always free of charge, and designed to empower you - not replace legal professionals. We believe justice should be accessible, understandable, and humane, and that lay support plays a valuable role in making that possible.

Direct Access Barristers

Once we've taken the time to understand your case, we can connect you with trusted, specialist direct access barristers from our carefully selected network. These are experienced legal professionals who can represent you in court or tribunal without the need for a solicitor. We only recommend barristers whose expertise aligns with your specific needs — ensuring you receive tailored, high‑quality representation when it matters most. Please note that referrals are subject to barrister availability and an initial assessment of suitability.

While our layman support is free, direct access barristers may charge fees for formal representation; any such fees will be agreed directly between you and the barrister.
